Introduction
We are excited to announce the MilUX Delivery Manager Training Programme, a comprehensive 6-month course designed to develop the full range of skills needed by a modern Delivery Manager. This programme incorporates Kanban University’s brand-new Flow Manager and Delivery Manager curricula, ensuring that participants learn cutting-edge practices for improving end-to-end flow and delivery performance. It covers all the competencies required for a UK Government DDaT Delivery Manager role, blending self-paced learning with live coaching, group discussions, and practical coursework. The first cohort is scheduled to start in October 25. If you are interested in elevating your delivery management skills, read on, and feel free to reach out to us at training@milux.co.uk for more details.
Overview and Highlights
Broad Skill Coverage: Over six months, participants will build expertise across all key Delivery Manager competencies as defined by the DDaT (Digital, Data and Technology) Capability Framework. From Agile delivery and team leadership to stakeholder communication and budgeting, the programme ensures you meet the Delivery Manager skill requirements in full. We’ve structured the curriculum to align with the DDaT framework so that you can confidently demonstrate the skills needed at Associate, Delivery Manager, and Senior Delivery Manager levels.
Kanban University Partnership: MilUX has teamed up with Kanban University to integrate their latest role-based training. The programme includes material from the newly introduced Flow Manager course (focused on managing and improving the flow of customer-valued work for faster, more predictable outcomes) and the new Delivery Manager course (focused on unblocking delivery challenges and boosting reliability and consistency in product/service delivery). By leveraging these globally recognised Kanban courses, we provide participants with proven techniques to optimise delivery beyond the team level – helping you design Kanban systems that improve throughput and predictability across your organisation. (As a bonus, each participant will receive access to MilUX Connect and a one-year subscription to Kanban+, to support ongoing learning and development.)
Blended Learning Approach: The Delivery Manager Training Programme is not a one-off workshop, but a guided journey. It combines self-paced online learning (so you can absorb fundamentals at your own pace) with live virtual training sessions led by experienced coaches. Throughout the 6 months, you’ll join group discussions and community forums to share experiences, and you’ll receive one-to-one coaching and mentoring to focus on your personal development areas. There will also be practical coursework and assignments to apply what you learn to real-world scenarios, ensuring you build confidence in using new tools and methods in your day-to-day role.
Fit-For-Purpose: In addition to core delivery management skills, we cover essential adjacent disciplines. Participants will learn principles of service design and the Fit-for-Purpose (F4P) framework, equipping you to define and measure what “good” looks like for your service from the customer’s perspective. By understanding service metrics and customer outcomes, Delivery Managers can continuously adjust and improve their delivery approach to ensure services remain fit for purpose. These additions help round out your capability to not just deliver to plan, but to deliver the right things in the right way for your users.
ELCAS: We are currently working with Kanban University and the Enhanced Learning Credits Accreditation Scheme to get this programme accredited as an official training package. This will mean that military personnel and veterans can leverage the MoD’s ELCAS scheme and receive funding support for completing the course.
Competencies Required of a Delivery Manager (DDaT)
As defined by the DDaT Delivery Manager capability framework, a Delivery Manager needs a broad set of competencies. Our programme is specifically designed to strengthen these core areas:
- Agile and Lean Practices: Ability to apply and adapt Agile/Lean methodologies to help teams work efficiently. This includes choosing appropriate delivery processes, encouraging experimentation, and continuously improving ways of working. A Delivery Manager should be an advocate and coach for Agile best practices across the team or organisation.
- Commercial Management: Understanding how to manage contracts and supplier relationships, and knowing internal procurement processes. Delivery Managers act as the point of contact for external suppliers and need to ensure value for money and alignment with delivery goals.
- Communicating Between Technical and Non-Technical: Being a bridge between diverse stakeholders. Delivery Managers must effectively communicate with both technical teams and non-technical business or leadership stakeholders, translating needs and managing expectations on all sides. This involves moderating discussions, simplifying technical jargon, and ensuring everyone stays aligned.
- Financial Management: Awareness of budgeting and cost control in delivery. Even though Delivery Managers may not always own the budget, they need to balance cost vs. value, monitor spend, and escalate financial issues when necessary. Basic financial literacy ensures that delivery is sustainable and provides ROI for the organisation.
- Life Cycle Management: Ability to manage products and services through different phases of the development life cycle. This means understanding what each phase (Discovery, Alpha, Beta, Live, etc.) requires, and planning transitions between phases. A Delivery Manager ensures that teams meet appropriate service standards and that work is ready to move to the next stage when appropriate.
- Maintaining Delivery Momentum: Keeping the team moving forward and delivering at a sustainable pace. This involves removing blockers, actively managing risks and dependencies (even those outside the team’s direct control), and ensuring the team’s “cadence and tempo” remain on track. The Delivery Manager monitors progress and intervenes early to prevent delays, maintaining focus on outcomes.
- Making a Process Work: Improving and tailoring processes to fit the team and organisational context. Rather than sticking blindly to a single methodology, Delivery Managers should guide teams in adapting processes, eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy, and embedding a culture of continuous improvement. They might challenge existing organisational processes and help implement better ways of working that increase efficiency and value.
- Planning: Prioritising and planning delivery in an ever-changing environment. A Delivery Manager needs to facilitate planning activities, from sprint plans to release roadmaps, and coordinate complex dependencies. This competency includes using data to inform plans, adjusting to changes, and providing confidence to stakeholders through transparent forecasting and risk management.
- Team Dynamics and Collaboration: Building and leading a healthy team culture. Delivery Managers should be able to form and maintain motivated teams, create an environment of trust and psychological safety, and address any team dynamic issues that arise. This also means encouraging collaboration, empowering team members, and sometimes coaching individuals for better performance.
By covering these competencies, our training ensures that participants are ready to perform in Delivery Manager roles in line with government and industry expectations. In government terms, a trained Delivery Manager is “accountable for the delivery of products and services”, and that is exactly what our course prepares you to handle.
Bridging the Skills Gap: MilUX’s Delivery Management Experience
Why did we create this programme?
At MilUX, we have first-hand experience leading and coaching delivery teams in complex public sector environments, and we’ve observed a clear skills gap in the field of delivery management.
Our team has been responsible for delivery management on high-profile projects such as the Land Deployed Applications Discovery (LDAD) for the British Army, a large-scale discovery initiative to modernise digital services in the deployed military domain. We led multidisciplinary teams through agile delivery in challenging conditions, learning what it takes to succeed when coordinating across numerous stakeholders, legacy systems, and evolving requirements. We have also provided coaching through Adaptavis to support portfolio delivery and delivered agile consultancy across multiple defence and government clients. Through these engagements, our delivery managers and coaches gained insights into where less-experienced delivery managers (and associates) struggle the most. Common pain points include: balancing agile practices with rigid legacy processes, effectively communicating technical issues to senior non-technical leaders, and managing dependencies in silos typical of government structures.
These real-world insights have directly informed our training programme design. We saw, for example, that Associate Delivery Managers often need more support in stakeholder communication and life cycle planning, whereas Senior Delivery Managers might need to deepen skills in risk management, team leadership, or scaling delivery across teams. Our curriculum is therefore targeted to bridge these skill gaps – providing not just theory, but practical techniques and mentoring to uplift capability in the areas we know are challenging on the job.
Moreover, working within Defence and other public sector stakeholders, we understand the context and constraints of government delivery. We know how important it is to align with frameworks like DDaT, while also navigating the unique culture and approvals processes in departments such as the Ministry of Defence. Participants will benefit from our lessons learned in these environments, essentially getting the “war stories” and proven approaches that have worked in defence and government settings to accelerate digital delivery.
Who Should Join this Programme
This programme is ideal for current and aspiring delivery professionals who want to take their capabilities to the next level. You should consider enrolling if:
- You are an Associate Delivery Manager or Delivery Manager looking to progress your career. The course will help you achieve the competencies for the next level in the DDaT framework, giving you the experience and evidence to move up (e.g., from Associate to full Delivery Manager, or Delivery Manager to Senior Delivery Manager).
- You lead teams in the public sector or defence sector. Our content is especially relevant to those working in government digital teams or Defence Digital projects, where understanding the official framework and navigating complex stakeholder landscapes is crucial. (Public sector stakeholders like those in the MoD, Defence Digital, and related agencies will find the programme tailored to their needs.)
- You are responsible for product or service delivery and need to improve outcomes. If you’re a team lead, product manager, or project manager stepping into a delivery lead role, this programme will formalize your knowledge of how to run delivery the right way – from setting up Kanban systems for flow, to running effective Agile ceremonies, to measuring success.
- You want to drive improvement in delivery performance. Many people come to this role because they see projects taking too long or failing to meet user needs. If you are motivated to reduce delivery times, improve predictability, and increase customer satisfaction, we will equip you with the methods (like flow metrics, service design, and Fit-for-Purpose techniques) to do so.
- You value mentorship and real-world application. Our blend of coaching and practice means this isn’t just academic learning. If you learn best by doing and by discussing real examples, you’ll appreciate the hands-on approach we take. We pair you with mentors who have delivered complex projects in government and industry, so you can directly apply lessons to your context.
There are no prerequisites to join; you do not need to already be a delivery manager or a Kanban expert. What you do need is the commitment to engage throughout the entire process and a willingness to challenge yourself to grow as a leader. Whether you come from an Agile delivery background or more traditional project management, the programme will meet you where you are and take you further.
